Sinkhole swallows Pittsburgh bus during rush hour

Rush hour commuters in Pittsburgh got a shock after a sinkhole opened up on a busy road and swallowed the back of a bus.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County, who run the busses, tweeted the bus was stopped at a red light at around 8am local time on Monday when the rear end disappeared into the hole.

The bus was left with the back, which houses the engine, underground and the front sticking up in the air.

There was only one passenger and the driver on board and both were able to exit.

A car behind the bus narrowly avoided falling into the hole.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and remained well into the evening.

The port authority later tweeted a crane was used to haul the bus out of the hole and the operation took a few hours.

They said the sinkhole was around six metres deep.
