Locals in northeast China are claiming to have seen a meteorite early Friday (local time), with residents capturing spectacular images of the shocking moment.

News agencies reported that it left the sky as "bright as a white pheasant" when it was seen over China's Jilin and Heilongjiang Provinces. It was witnessed just after midnight on Friday.

"The footage captured by surveillance cameras in Songyuan showed that the suspected meteorite suddenly lit up the sky," reports local news source CCTV.

Local scientists confirmed they received several reports of the sighting, and further research is being carried out.

Closer to home, a similar-looking meteor was seen shooting over Australia in June.

The incredible event was witnessed by thousands of Queenslanders, who took to social media to report seeing the flash.

Scientists said the meteor was likely caused by the "Taurid Swarm" - the debris left over from a massive comet.

It's unclear, at this stage, what caused the meteor over China.
