A man accused of going on a stabbing spree in Sydney in August now faces additional charges relating to child abuse.

Mert Ney is alleged to have stabbed and killed a woman in the city's CBD before going on to stab another woman, who survived.

Video filmed by bystanders showed Ney brandishing a large knife after the alleged stabbings, before members of the public used chairs and a milk crate to restrain him until police arrived.

Appearing via video link in Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday, Ney faced further charges of possessing child abuse material, possessing 1.6 grams of cannabis and going armed with intent to commit and indictable offence, reports ABC news.

According to Ney's lawyer Zemari Khatiz, the child abuse material was found on a USB drive. Khatiz said his client denied possessing the material.

At the time of his arrest, police said Ney was carrying a USB containing details of the Christchurch massacre.

"Information was found on him that would suggest he had some ideologies related to terrorism... but he has no apparent links to other terrorist organisations," police said.

Ney had a history of mental illness and had checked himself into a mental health facility before his alleged crime, police said.
