'This is gonna look so bad': Bodycam footage released after black man led on rope by Texas police officers

The image of a black man in Texas being led by a rope by white police officers on horseback sparked outrage earlier this year.

Now, the Galveston Police Department has released footage from the officer's body cam.

The never-before-seen video is roughly 30 minutes long, showing the initial arrest of 43-year-old Donald Neely, who was handcuffed and tethered to a rope.

Neely was then walked through the streets of Galveston by the two officers on horseback. Instead of waiting for a police car, the officers walked Neely reportedly eight blocks to the police station.

The viral image of the controversial August arrest sparked outrage and accusations of racism across the world, with many saying Neely's treatment was reminiscent of runaway slaves being captured in pre-abolition America.

The bodycam footage has now revealed one of the officers acknowledging the severity of the situation, exclaiming, "this is gonna look so bad".

Neely, a mentally ill man who was once homeless, was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespassing.

The officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing, and Galveston police say the practice of using rope has been discontinued following the incident.
