Two people are dead and at least fourteen more injured after a shooting at a homecoming party in Texas.

Late on Saturday night an unidentified shooter opened fire into a crowd of people at the party in Greenville.

The shooter remains at large, reports CNN.

Efforts to find the gunman are being hindered by a lack of witnesses, says Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks.

"It appalls me that as many folks that were there, they have not been able to give us a better description of this shooter," he told reporters.

Police were called to The Party Venue, an event space northeast of Dallas, after reports of cars parked illegally on the highway.

Officers arrived on scene at 11:30pm, and shots began to ring out approximately fifteen minutes later, said Buddy Oxford, chief deputy of the Hunt County Sheriff's Office.

Around 750 people were at the party, reports CNN.

The majority of those attending were in their teens and early 20s.

"It was packed. It gave the opportunity for this shooter to accomplish what he wanted to accomplish," said Meeks.

"When you have this many people in one place, it's an easy target for somebody and then we had just one security guard there."

There are no security cameras at the venue.
