US police officer saves four-month-old baby from choking

A South Carolina mother's worst fear played out in front of her as her four-month-old daughter started choking, but the heroics of a first responder was all caught on camera.

Kiersten Nivens' baby girl, Maryelle, started choking after she tried giving her daughter some pain relief for teething problems, Fox Carolina reports.

Nivens ran outside before neighbours called emergency services and luckily, a police officer -  Derrall Foster - quickly arrived to help.

Foster's fatherly instinct kicked in, and his heroics were captured by his body camera. In footage released by the local police department, he's seen performing the Heimlich manoeuvre.

"I saw my two-year-old as if it was her, and I knew we had to take care of the situation," Foster told Fox Carolina.

"I'm just doing my job, that's all I was doing."

Nivens told Fox she was "so thankful" for Foster, and other emergency services that arrived at the scene.
