Shocking footage of an off-duty South Australian (SA) police officer stoning a wombat to death has gone viral, prompting an investigation.

In the video, a shirtless man can be seen stalking the helpless creature and repeatedly throwing stones at it, while another man following him in a car is heard yelling "kill him".

As the wombat struggles to get away, the cop keeps throwing stones, with one causing a blow to its head.

The footage was initially posted on social media by the Wombat Awareness Organisation, who say they're "heartbroken".

"I am tired of reporting such cruelty for it to be ignored," the organisation said on Facebook.

"Please share, this is not entertainment. This has to stop!"

An investigation into the incident has been launched by police, SA Commissioner Grant Stevens told 9 News.

"If there are any offences committed, they will be investigated and dealt with as they would be for any other person."

The Facebook post by the Wombat organisation sparked outrage amongst animal lovers with thousands expressing their disgust and sadness.
