The anti-domestic violence charity White Ribbon Australia has shut down.

The not-for-profit has gone into voluntary liquidation, "following an analysis of the organisation's future sustainability", reports the Guardian.

"It is with profound sadness that the board of White Ribbon Australia informs the community and supporters that it has taken the very difficult decision to close its doors," the organisation said in a statement.

The charity sought to raise awareness around domestic violence through its "white ribbon ambassadors", with men donning a white ribbon to show they do not condone violence against women.

Members agreed at a general meeting on Wednesday to close the charity down, according to the Guardian.

"Even though White Ribbon Australia's journey ends here, we know that the work of our partners and communities will continue. Eliminating men's violence against women must remain a priority," the charity said in a statement.

In February, The Daily Telegraph reported that the charity was AUS$840,000 (NZ$900,000) in the red.

The charity had a staff of 30 full-time and 13 part-time workers, as well as more than 1200 volunteers.
