Australia bushfires: Crowdfunding campaign raises over $1 million for koalas devastated by blazes

A GoFundMe campaign to help koalas in affected bushfire regions in Australia has raised more than NZ$1 million.

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, whose staff have spent weeks searching for koalas in the area, started the campaign last month.

As of Friday afternoon (NZ time), the campaign had raised NZ$1.27m.

More than 350 koalas are feared to have died in the bushfires, and about 31 have been brought to the hospital to be treated.

"Donations have now reached an incredible amount and we are extending the project to establish a wild koala breeding program," the GoFundMe page says.

"Hopefully, these koalas will breed and a new population of koalas will be returned to the wild."

The bushfires have killed at least four people, burned 2.5 million acres of land and destroyed more than 300 homes.
