A 10-year-old boy was killed in a horrific four-vehicle collision in New South Wales on Wednesday, while on the way to school with his mum and sister.

Local media have named Harley Dexter as the victim of the crash involving a truck and three cars, on NSW's M5 near the southern Sydney suburb of Riverwood on Wednesday.

A Facebook fundraiser, led by Harley's aunty, has been launched to help support the family and has raised nearly $7,500.

"My sister and her children were hit by a truck on the M5 - my nephew died on the scene. My sister and my niece are in the hospital in critical condition.

"The last thing my sister needs is to worry about how she is going to afford a funeral," the fundraising page says.

Harley's aunty, who wished to remain anonymous, told 7 News, "from what I know they were just going to school and it happened.

"No-one can empathise more than she can in regard to losing a child like this," she said.

Police said the driver of the truck has been charged as a result of the incident. Harley's mum and niece remain in hospital in critical condition.

Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Glinn said despite the charges, the exact cause of the crash is unconfirmed and the investigation is ongoing.

Glinn told reporters police would be investigating factors such as distraction, tiredness, and the way the truck driver, a 26-year-old man, was driving his vehicle, news.com.au reported.
