The moment a heavily pregnant woman was brutally attacked by a stranger at a western Sydney eatery has been captured on CCTV camera.

The 31-year-old woman was with friends at a Parramatta food court at around 10:30pm on Wednesday (local time) when a man is seen approaching their table.

After briefly speaking, the man can be seen punching the unidentified woman, who is 38 weeks pregnant, several times in the head and upper body.

Having fallen to the ground from the brutal assault, the stranger proceeded to allegedly stomp on the woman's head.

A number of other patrons rushed to restrain the man until police arrived.

On Thursday, the alleged offender was identified as 43-year-old Stipe Lozina. He appeared before Parramatta Local Court and has been charged with affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, 7 News reports.

The woman, who remains under observation in hospital, has been left "emotionally and physically traumatised" by the attack.

According to the outlet, police said Lozina was screaming anti-Islamic slurs at the pregnant woman and her friends, who were all wearing headscarves.

Inspector Luke Sywenkyj told news.com.au that the woman suffered a number of bruises and some swelling.

"Our police investigation at this stage is still in its infancy but the assault would appear to be completely random and unprovoked," he said.

The condition of the unborn child is not yet known.
