Facebook appears to be undergoing a major outage, with many around the globe reporting the social media site is down.

According to Downdetecter, which monitors outages online, various people around the world reported problems with the site.

Users have also reported problems on Facebook-owned Instagram, but the site seems to be working again as of 5:30am (NZ time).

The photo-sharing site acknowledged the issues on rival social media site Twitter, writing: "We're aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook's family of apps, including Instagram. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

People responded to the outage with humour online.

"Facebook and Instagram is [sic] down so I've just invented a new social site. It's called "Outside", wrote one person on Twitter.

"Facebook and Instagram crashed. Overloaded with people posting pictures of food even though they are all eating the same thing today," wrote another.

The outage comes as the United States celebrates the Thanksgiving holiday, on which turkey is the traditional dish.
