Former UK Speaker of the House John Bercow finally reveals his opinion on Brexit

He's been through four Prime Ministers, three elections, two referenda and called for "order" more than 14,000 times.

Now, British parliamentary speaker John Bercow, 56, is calling it quits - and finally revealing his views on Brexit, calling it the worst foreign policy decision since World War II.

For a decade, Bercow's job was to chastise MPs - his style far from the dullness one would usually expect from a Speaker of the House of Commons.

"Take up take up yoga, you'll find it beneficial man" is one highlight from his ten-year career.

Presiding over a tumultuous decade in British politics, culminating in the fiasco that is Brexit.

"I don't think politics has gone mad," Bercow told Newshub.

"I think politics has changed beyond recognition in recent times and that's because of one thing - Brexit."

It's a minefield for any politician to navigate, let alone referee. Now he's left the speaker's chair, Bercow can have an opinion about it.

"Brexit is the worst foreign policy decision Britain has made since the Second World War," he declared.

The 56-year-old has proved to be the not-so-secret nemesis of those trying to push Brexit through at any cost.

"He's done more than anyone since Stephen Hawking to stretch time in this particular session," said UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Yet many admired Bercow's precise turn of phrase.

"I've always enjoyed public speaking. My late father used to say, 'John, generally speaking, is generally speaking'," he said.

The self-described moderniser and reformer has overhauled parliament's rules - but he has yet to pull 'a Trevor Mallard'.

"Your counterpart in New Zealand sits in the chair with a baby and feeds a baby - why haven't you done that?" asked Newshub's Europe correspondent, Lloyd Burr.

"Well, I don't have a baby I need to sit with and feed," Bercow answered.

Bercow will go down as one of the great speakers - and a hard act to follow.
