A young woman who was dragged into bushes by a stranger in Melbourne has spoken out about the terrifying ordeal.

Amy Sangiah, 20, was running through Bellbird Park in the Melbourne suburb of Berwick around 10am on Friday (local time) when a young man attempted to start a conversation.

Sangiah claims the stranger repeatedly asked her if she was single and how much money she had in her bank account.

When the 20-year-old refused to engage with his questions, he attempted to force her into the nearby bushes.

"He just came running at me and grabbed me. He was trying to push me down into the bushes onto the ground," Sangiah told 7 News.

Sangiah successfully fought off the man, escaping his grasp and crying out for help.

"Some low life decided to assault my sister [Amy] in broad daylight in Berwick while she was going on a run. What started out as general conversation quickly turned aggressive," the 20-year-old's sister, Natasha Sangiah, wrote on Facebook on Friday afternoon.

"Once my sister tried to leave he grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her clothes and pushed her into the ground into a bush and spat on her. Simultaneously he started yelling racial slurs at her and threatened to punch her.

"Thankfully a lady in a nearby house heard her crying... she found my sister and called the police. As he ran off, he continued yelling abusive comments."

The local resident, identified as Rachel, told 7 News she saw Sangiah running out from the bushes.

"The victim came out from the bushes and said, 'Have you seen a man running? He's tried to hit me'," she told the outlet.

A picture of the alleged attacker has been shared to the sisters' Facebook pages. The man has been described as "Asian, average to tall [in] height and [of a] skinny build". He is believed to be aged 18 to 20.

"You hear stories about it but you never think it will happen to you, let alone in broad daylight," Sangiah told 7 News.

Natasha Sangiah posted an update to Facebook on Sunday, saying the alleged offender has yet to be found.

Victoria Police confirmed the incident is being investigated.

Sangiah said she will be taking her dog along with her on future runs.
