South Korean pop star Goo Hara was found dead in her Seoul home on Sunday evening.

Gangnam District Police told the Associated Press the 28-year-old singer's cause of death wasn't immediately known and reportedly refused to provide any further detail.

The BBC reports Hara was found in her Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam home at 6pm on Sunday (local time).

Hara is known for being a member of the 2008 K-pop group Kara, which has a large following in South Korea, Japan and other Asian countries.

She released her first solo album, Alohara (Can You Feel It?), in 2015 and has made several appearances on Korean television shows.

Hara has 1 million Instagram followers.

She was hospitalised in May after allegedly attempting suicide and later apologised for causing concern.

Despite her popularity, it's reported that over the last year her career was overshadowed by her love life. In 2018, Hara took legal action against an ex-boyfriend after he used a sex video of her to threaten her career.

Hara's death is not the first in the K-pop industry this year. In October, popular singer Sulli took her own life, while in 2017 Kim Jong-hyun also died by suicide.

According to the World Population Review, the suicide rate per capita in South Korea is the 10th highest in the world.
