US police are investigating after a baby was offered up for sale on Craigslist.

The ad, placed on the online advertising site in Florida last week, purported to offer up the newborn child - with its toddler sister thrown in for free.

"Selling brand newborn baby for $500. Baby is 2weeks old. It sleeps, don't make noise at night. Formula and clothes will give to you. Can give you the baby 4 year old sister for free," the ad reads.

"I live in a quiet influential neighbourhood and works for the Florida Department of Children and Families. I don't wanna be judged for not wanting these kids."

Police are taking the post seriously, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has launched an investigation into whether the ad is genuine.

"We do have an active investigation that started last Friday," FDLE spokeswoman, Gretl Plessinger, told the Miami Herald.

According to the newspaper, the FDLE interviewed a woman they suspected of being behind the post, however she denied any involvement.

The FDLE is now waiting for computer records to help them determine who was responsible for the post.

If real, it wouldn't be the first time someone has attempted to sell their infant. A Tennessee man and woman were arrested in 2017 after police said they attempted to sell their five-month-old son on Craigslist.

And in 2015 a South African woman was charged with human trafficking charges after trying to sell her 19-month-old baby on popular advertising website Gumtree. She was asking just 5000 rand (NZ$560.62).
