A man allegedly murdered a US college student after she ignored the "catcall" he gave as she walked to her car.

Ruth George was found dead in the backseat of her vehicle in the University of Illinois car park on Sunday.

The 19-year-old student was walking to her car after a university event when 26-year-old Donald Thurman catcalled her.

Prosecutors say he got angry after she ignored him.

They allege he followed her to her car, choked her until she was unconscious and then raped her in the backseat of the car, reports CNN.

George's family grew worried when she didn't return home and reported their fears to the university police.

Her body was found after authorities tracked her phone.

"She was the beloved baby of our family," said her family in a statement to the Chicago Tribune.

"We grieve with hope. We hold no hatred towards the perpetrator but our hope is that no other girl would be harmed in this way and for a mother to never experience this type of heartache."

Thurman was arrested on Sunday and charged with murder and aggravated sexual assault.

He admitted to choking George, throwing her into the back seat of the car and sexually assaulting her while she was unconscious but says he did not have sexual intercourse with her.

He will be held without bail.
