The house was owned by Benton County Sherriff Don Munson and was set up to house the snakes.
Hurst kept snakes there and would visit them regularly the Lafayette Journal and Courier reported.
Indiana police said Hurst was found on Wednesday local time with the python loosely wrapped around her neck.
The snake was able to be removed but she could not be resuscitated.
Indiana police said in a statement the python was one of 140 snakes found inside the home. Around 20 of the snakes belonged to Hurst.
"She appears to have been strangled by the snake. We do not know that for a fact until after the autopsy," Sgt. Kim Riley, an Indiana State Police spokesman, told the Lafayette Journal and Courier.
