At least six people have died in a gunfight in New Jersey.

Among the victims are a police officer and three civilians. The other two deaths were the suspected gunmen, reports The New York Times.

The gunfight broke out after two men opened fire on a police officer in a cemetery in Jersey City.

The gunmen then fled the scene by truck and barricaded themselves in a kosher market.

While holed up in the store they continued to shoot at police, with many in the area reporting the ongoing sound of loud gunshots.

Dozens of armed police were called the scene, with a video posted to social media appearing to show snipers on surrounding roofs.

Police confirmed the death of the officer on Twitter, with Jersey City's mayor Steven Fulop saying "multiple" people had died.

Police said two other officers and a civilian were "also struck by gunfire but they are stable".

According to The New York Times, the kosher store where the men ended up was chosen randomly, and the incident was not being treated a hate crime.

Officials also said there was "no indication of terrorism".

Nearby schools have been placed in lockdown, with the Jersey City School District tweeting that "all students and staff are safe".

Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that his "thoughts and prayers" were with the victims.

"We will continue to monitor the situation as we assist local and state officials in the ground."
