The daughter of former Australia Prime Minister Bob Hawke claims she was raped by an ex-Labor MP, and that she was asked to keep it a secret.

Alleged to have raped her is Bill Landeryou, who died earlier this year.

In a report by The New Daily, citing court documents in a lawsuit on her dad's estate worth NZ$4.17 million, Rosslyn Dillon alleges she told her father about the rape in the 1980s but he told her, "You can't go to the police".

"I can't have controversies right now. I am sorry but I am challenging for the leadership of the Labor Party," Hawke allegedly said, according to the court documents.

In the documents, which have been submitted to the New South Wales Supreme Court, Dillon says her father "asked me to let the matter go for him and I did so for him," The New Daily reports.

Landeryou was reportedly close friends with Hawke. He served as a member of the Labor Party between 1976 and 1992.

Known as a political icon, Hawke also died earlier this year, passing away peacefully in his home aged 89.

Hawke was the longest-serving Labor Prime Minister in Australia, leading the country from 1983 to 1991.

He is often ranked among Australia's greatest leaders, coming in second behind World War II-era Prime Minister John Curtin in a 2010 Monash University survey of academics.
