A 24-year-old woman in the Greek city of Kalamata has been arrested for allegedly throwing a baby in a rubbish chute.

The newborn was discovered in a bin on Wednesday after a local woman heard it crying and rescued it, the BBC reported.

The baby boy's life was reportedly saved because a rubbish collection truck was running late.

Mayor of Kalamata Thanassis Vassilopoulos said the child was lucky the rubbish collection was delayed.

"The garbage trucks do not just load waste, they compress it," he told Greece's Alpha TV.

Local woman Vassilike Tsoni who found the baby told local website NewsIt the child was inside a paper bag.

"I open the bin in the morning and shout 'a child'. I live in a densely populated area of Kalamata, no one stopped," she said.

Tsoni claims neighbours were telling her the cries were coming from a kitten, not a child.

The baby was rescued by police and taken to hospital. It is expected he'll make a full recovery, according to NewsIt.

Police say the suspected mother of the baby was arrested for attempted murder. She is reportedly from Georgia.
