Greta Thunberg in Twitter spat with German train company for implying she sat on the floor of 'overcrowded' train

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been criticised by a German train company for implying she sat on the floor for her journey back to Sweden.

The teenager posted a photograph of herself sitting on the floor of a train surrounded by luggage.

"Travelling on overcrowded trains through Germany. And I'm finally on my way home!" she wrote.

The train company Deutsche Bahn quickly replied to the Tweet, thanking Thunberg for travelling with them.

"Thank you for supporting us railroaders in the fight against climate change," it wrote.

"We were happy that you travelled with us on Saturday.…but it would have been even nicer had you also reported how friendly and competently you were looked after by our team at your seat in the first class," the company continued.

However, Thunberg replied saying the train company's claim she had travelled exclusively in first-class was false.

"Our train from Basel was taken out of traffic. So we sat on the floor on two different trains," she wrote. "After Gottingen I got a seat."

She was quick to point out that her original tweet was not a criticism.

"This is no problem of course and I never said it was. Overcrowded trains is a great sign because it means the demand for train travel is high!"

Thunberg is making her way home to Sweden after a year of travelling by train, sea and road to highlight the threat of climate change.

Last week the 16-year-old was named as Time Magazine's Person of the Year for her tireless work.

"In the 16 months since [her 2018 School Strike for Climate Change], she has addressed heads of state at the UN, met with the Pope, sparred with the President of the United States and inspired four million people to join the global climate strike on September 20, 2019, in what was the largest climate demonstration in human history," the magazine wrote.

The 16-year-old said she is looking forward to a rest before "a year of action" in 2020.
