'I miss pies. I miss beer': Kiwis in London send messages home to loved ones

As Kiwis take to the beach to cool off or lie in the sun, spare a thought for the tens of thousands of New Zealanders trying to stay warm in Europe.

Some are just visiting, but many call the continent home - and will spend the festive season away from family, friends, and other loved ones.

In the United Kingdom, there are nearly 60,000 Kiwis with the majority based in London - including Newshub's Europe bureau.

And with the annual Kiwis in London Christmas Party being held in the British capital, Newshub decided it would be the perfect location to set up our camera and allow revellers to record Christmas messages for their loved ones in New Zealand.

It was slow going at first, but after a few Speights or Tui beers, there was no shortage of New Zealanders wanting some facetime.

Watch the video for a selection of those messages, including a guy with dreads who gives a shout out to his nana in Taupo, another who sends a 'danger swig' to his mum and dad, and many messages to pets (Lulu and Bella) their owners abandoned when they moved to Europe.

"Merry Christmas Stratford", says one. "Merry Christmas to the Speedway Family," says another.

"I miss the sunshine. I miss pies. I miss beer," says Kiwis in London founder Clint Heine. Luckily for Clint, he'd organised a London-based Kiwi butcher/baker to satisfy his cravings with a special pie stall.

Another reveller (jokingly we think) introduced his new fiance to his parents: "This is my new girlfriend Katie. We found love and she doesn't know it but we're getting engaged. Oh My God!," he says.

A female partygoer (from the Netherlands by the sounds) came to the party because she misses her Kiwi friends who've moved back to New Zealand. "I'll see you next year and by then I'm going to have a Kiwi husband who I'm meeting tonight!".

The last message summed up the sentiment from many: "I miss the beach, have some beers for me, and I'll see you in a couple of years."

So to the parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives, friends, loved ones, and of course pets, sending you a Merry Christmas from this wonderful side of the world.
