An Irish citizen who became an Islamic State bride was arrested on arrival in Dublin on suspicion of terrorist offences.

Lisa Smith, 38, and her two-year-old daughter were deported from Turkey and landed in Ireland on Sunday shortly after 10am (local time), Irish broadcaster RTE reported.

Smith was escorted by police off the plane while covered by a blanket. She is now being questioned by police on her suspected offences.

She first travelled to Syria in 2015 to live in the Islamic State.

Irish Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan said it is a sensitive case and he wanted to reassure the public that all relevant state agencies were working together. He wouldn't comment further on the situation.

Smith's daughter, who was born in Syria but is an Irish citizen, is being looked after by relatives.

Irish deputy prime minister Simon Coveney said they had been working with various agencies to respond to this case, primarily to ensure the safety of her daughter.

Smith and her daughter had been living in a Syrian refugee camp. It is unclear how they arrived in Istanbul for deportation.
