Malta's Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat has announced on national television he'll resign early in the new year.
The decision was made after 20,000 protesters marched through the streets of Malta calling for his resignation following the 2017 car bombing which killed journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Muscat is set to resign on Sunday, January 12th 2020.
"On that day I will resign as a leader of the labour party and in the days after I will resign as prime minister."
A businessman with apparent ties to the government was also arrested on the weekend, and senior ministers have resigned.
"I think the Prime Minister has a perfect poker face," said one protester.
Among the 20,000 protesters Caruana Galizia's father listened as they chanted 'justice', reported Newshub's Europe Correspondent Lloyd Burr.
Galizia led the Panama papers corruption investigation in Malta. The corruption Caruana Galizia exposed provoked protests on the streets at the time.
The journalist exposed many powerful figures over the world and gained many enemies by accusing them of funnelling foreign currencies in order to avoid offshore taxes.
