More than 10,000 told to evacuate Victoria as Australia bushfires draw closer

Tens of thousands of people have been instructed to evacuate Victoria as Australia's bushfires grow worse.

On Monday, soaring temperatures, strong wind and thunderstorms meant those in the East Gippsland area of Victoria were in what authorities described as "extreme danger".

An estimated 30,000 people are currently on holiday in the area, according to ABC News.

Victoria's state emergency management commissioner Andrew Crisp said anyone in the area should leave no later than Monday morning (local time), and no one should attempt to travel to the area.

Fires are burning near Bruthen, Buchan and Bonang, and all three are forecast to grow significantly larger, reports the BBC.

More than 100 fires are burning across Australia with no signs of easing up. So far, eight people have died in the fires and more than 700 homes have been destroyed.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has promised volunteer firefighters who have missed work to help with the disaster will receive compensation.
