Nancy Pelosi sent a stern message to the House on Wednesday (local time) after representatives voted to impeach US President Donald Trump.

The Democrat-controlled House voted to pass two articles of impeachment against Trump: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

But as lawmakers celebrated the moment the votes passed, Pelosi quickly shut them down with a stern glance.

Early that day the Speaker had said Congress had "no choice" but to impeach Trump.

"It is tragic that the president's reckless actions make impeachment necessary," she said.

Pelosi's stern look appeared to be a reminder to her fellow Democrats that the vote was a "tragic" event, and there was no cause for celebration.

Trump became one of only three presidents to be formally impeached in the country's history.

The other two were Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Richard Nixon also faced impeachment proceedings but resigned before being formally impeached.

No president has ever been removed from office through the process.

The next step for Trump is to face a trial in the Senate. With Republicans holding a majority there, though, it is highly unlikely a 'yes' vote will get the two-thirds majority necessary for Trump to be removed from office.
