A coroner's inquest has revealed how an attempt to copy a reality TV challenge tragically lead to the death of a disabled woman in the UK.

On June, 30-year-old Mia Austin, who suffered from a stroke a decade ago resulting in locked-in syndrome, had bought some marshmallows before returning to her accommodation at a holiday park in Wales.

When back at the accommodation, the person who was caring for Mia placed a marshmallow in her mouth, but she started to choke.

Because of her condition, she was unable to cough the marshmallow up and she suffocated to death, the BBC reports, citing Coroner Dewi Pritchard Jones who ruled the death accidental.

"Apparently on Love Island they did a marshmallow challenge, you put marshmallows in the mouth. That's what she wanted to do with two friends," Mia's mum Carol told the inquest.

Mia has been remembered as an "inspirational young woman". Despite her disability, she still worked with charities helping the homeless, and even travelled to Africa to work with less fortunate communities, the BBC reports.

"Her legacy will live on in the fantastic work that she did and the lives and the lives that she touched," organisers of the Merseyside Women of the Year Awards told the inquest. Mia was announced the winner of the prize the day after she died.
