Samoan measles crisis death toll continues to rise

The death toll in the Samoan measles crisis continues to rise, with two more fatalities in the last 24 hours.

In a statement, the Samoan government confirmed a total of 65 deaths since the outbreak started.

"The Ministry of Health confirms a total of 4460 measles cases have been reported to the Disease Surveillance Team, since the outbreak started. There were 103 recorded in the last 24 hours."

There are currently 165 patients in health facilities receiving treatment, including 18 critically ill children and three pregnant women.

The Ministry of Health said the total number of measles cases admitted to all hospitals is 1407. Of that, 1177 patients have been discharged.

The statement said that as of December 6, approximately 89 percent of all eligible people in Samoa have been vaccinated against measles.

The estimated vaccination coverage in Samoa is 85 percent of targeted infants and children aged six months to four years old and 96 percent of targeted children aged five to 19.
