A couple who threw their baby at a security guard after a being caught stealing from a Target store are being sought by police in Pennsylvania.

The couple were approached by security after being seen putting numerous cans of baby formula into their backpack on December 10, the Springfield Delco Police Department said in a statement on Facebook.

At the time, the man was carrying the baby in a car seat. When the couple tried to leave the store and were confronted by security, the man then threw the car seat - with the baby inside - at the security officer.

"He threw the baby at him, it was in a car seat, the car seat tipped, it went sliding on the floor, fell over, and the baby rolled out," Springfield police chief Joe Daly told local news outlet WPVI.

It is not known if the baby was injured in the incident.

"Security tended to the infant and contacted 911," police said on Facebook. The woman then returned and collected the child, before fleeing the store with the man before police arrived.

On Facebook, police shared photos of the couple and urged anyone who knew their identities to contact authorities.
