A young child has died in a freak snowplow accident in the US.

The six-year-old fell off the machine's seat on Friday (local time), while riding it with his father and brother in Provo Canyon, Utah.

Police have named the boy as Herman Slaughter.

Herman received critical injuries after being hit in the head by the snowplow's bucket. His father then performed CPR until emergency services arrived, according to a statement by the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

"Paramedics determined the boy's injuries were too severe and he was pronounced dead at the scene," the sheriff's office said.

"There’s nothing to indicate that this was negligent or that this was anything other than a tragic accident," Utah County Sheriff's Sergeant Spencer Cannon told Deseret News.

Neither Herman's father nor brother were hurt in the accident.
