A US man who was beaten and robbed in a $1 (NZ$1.50) mugging on Christmas Eve, has died in Bronx hospital.

Juan Fresnada, aged 60 years old, died on Friday after defending his partner from attackers.

Fresnada and his 29-year-old partner, Byron Caceres, were on a midnight stroll at 1:30 am when they were approached by a group of muggers who demanded they give them their valuables.

When the couple protested, police said the thieves began to beat the men.

According to the New York Daily News, Fresnada sacrificed himself and urged his partner to run to safety.

"He tried to defend me," said Caceres.

But as Caceres does not own a cellphone, he could not call Police and contact information was not found until Saturday. All the attackers took was one dollar, Police told the NY Daily News.

According to the Daily News, Fresnada was much loved by his neighbours and was described as being a "beautiful guy."
