A US woman who bought what she thought was a baby bouncer for a friend was shocked when she discovered what was inside the box.

When Veronica Alvarez-Rodriguez handed the gift over, she was horrified to find a semi-automatic rifle inside what appeared to be an unopened box.

Alvarez-Rodriguez told Northwest Florida Daily News she and her husband had paid NZ$14 for what they believed to be a second hand Baby Einstein baby bouncer at a charity shop.

"It was like the perfect gift for the baby shower," she said.

When the gift was opened by the father of the expectant baby, he yelled "You guys got me a gun!"

Alvarez-Rodriguez and her husband called police immediately.

The officer who responded to the call initially allowed the father-to-be to keep the gun. However, on Monday he was asked to hand it over to the department.

The incident is under investigation and the charity shop from which the gun was bought did not comment.
