Vaccination event in US cancelled amid harassment from anti-vaxxers

A Nevada organisation promoting vaccinations has cancelled two events due to harassment from radical anti-vaxxers.

Immunize Nevada's executive director Heidi Parker told the Reno Gazette-Journal that anti-vaxxers have been tormenting the restaurant hired to host its events.

She says several people posted fake reviews for the restuarants on Yelp and Facebook. The Reno Gazette-Journal also reports commenters threatening to turn up in-person at the events.

Parker says the organisation originally planned on holding two breakfasts called 'Big Shots' to promote vaccinations.

However, after the harassment and the threats, the breakfasts were cancelled and replaced with one statewide, online event.

It raised more than US$14,726.

In July, another vaccination event was compromised by anti-vaxxers. Parker says a group of protesters showed up to the annual Family Health Festival in Sun Valley, where organisations provide free health care and vaccines.

The anti-vaxxer movement has gained popularity in recent years thanks largely to online conspiracy theories. It was labelled one of the top ten global health threats of 2019 by the World Health Organization.
