A 100-kilogram ball of rubbish has been found inside the stomach of a dead whale on a Scottish island.
The young sperm whale was discovered stranded on the Isle of Harris last Thursday.
Scientists found a range of plastic products as well as nets and rope and say it would have impacted the animal's digestion.
Nearby resident Dan Parry told the BBC it was "desperately sad", adding he walks along the beaches in the area most days.
"I always take a bag to pick up litter, most of which is fishing-related," he told the BBC.
A similar incident happened in Thailand last Monday. A dead deer was found with 7kg of plastic in its stomach near a national park.
Upon examination, the stag's body was found to contain coffee sachets, instant noodle flavouring packets, plastic bags, rubber gloves, hand towels, and even men's underwear.
Earlier this year an orphaned baby dugong rescued in southern Thailand died from pieces of plastic clogging her digestive system.
In June last year, a pilot whale was found dead with 80 pieces of plastic rubbish weighing eight kilograms in its stomach.
