A wild case of road rage in Australia has left a man hospitalised and a four-wheel-drive on top of a ute after one driver allegedly attacked a passenger with an axe handle.

The incident began in Beaudesert, west of the Gold Coast, just before 7pm on Saturday (local time) when a Toyota Hilux allegedly blocked a Nissan four-wheel-drive.

The Toyota driver allegedly got out of their vehicle and savagely attacked the passenger in the Nissan with the base of an axe, 7 News reports. The passenger suffered head and hand injuries as a result.

In an attempt to escape the battering, the driver of the Nissan stepped on the accelerator to get away from the enraged man.

However, they rammed into the Hilux and ended up driving over it, crushing in its top as their vehicle came to rest on it.

7 News reports that the drivers are believed to be known to each other. The passenger was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Police say no arrests have been made so far and investigations are continuing.
