Nearly a dozen musicians have been shot and burned in an ambush in Mexico.

The group of 10 were all indigenous men, returning from a party they had been performing at in the town of Chilapa in Guerrero, BBC News reports.

The Los Ardillos cartel, which frequently targets indigenous people in the area, is being blamed for the attack, which left the victims' bodies burned beyond recognition.

The youngest victim was 15, the oldest 42.

Guerrero is one of Mexico's most violent states thanks to drug trafficking.

A new drive to recruit anti-drug law enforcement has struggled, with most too scared to sign up.
