Donald Trump has had a US$3 million (NZ$4.5 million) price put on his head by a politician in Iran.

The bounty comes after Trump ordered the assassination of top Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani earlier this month.

Ahmad Hamzeh, a member of parliament, offered the bounty on behalf of the people of Kerman, reports Al Jazeera. Kerman was the hometown of Soleimani and his remains are buried there.

"We will give $3 million to anyone who kills Trump," Hamzeh was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

It is unclear whether his threat had any backing from Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei or any other of the country's politicians.

US disarmament ambassador Robert Wood dismissed the comments as "ridiculous".

Wood told reporters in Switzerland the threat showed the "terrorist underpinnings" of Iran's leaders.

Hamzeh, who made the comment while speaking to the country's parliament, also said Iran should start producing nuclear weapons.

"If we had nuclear weapons today, we would be protected from threats ... We should put the production of long-range missiles capable of carrying unconventional warheads on our agenda. This is our natural right," he said.

Earlier in January, an Iranian politician called Trump a "terrorist in a suit"

"Like ISIS, like Hitler, like Genghis! They all hate cultures. Trump is a terrorist in a suit. He will learn history very soon that nobody can defeat the great Iranian nation & culture," Information and Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi wrote in a tweet.

Tension between the United States and Iran has spiked over the last month, beginning when an American contractor was killed in Iraq in late December.

US officials blamed Iranian-backed militia Kata'ib Hezbollah for the attack and subsequently carried out military strikes against the militia, which killed at least 25 of its fighters.

The strike triggered protests in the streets of Iraq, including on the US embassy in Baghdad by Iranian-backed militia.

Following the killing of Soleimani, Iran admitted to accidentally shooting down a Ukrainian passenger plane after its defence missile system was triggered.

All 176 people on board that flight were killed, including 57 Canadian passengers.
