Lightning storm in Sydney strikes two people in 10 minutes

A lightning storm in Sydney has struck two people just minutes apart.

A 71-year-old woman in Arcadia, northern Sydney was struck in the chest by a lightning bolt outside her home, according to 7 News.

It is believed one bolt hit a tree in her front yard just after 5pm on Monday, and while she was investigating it a second bolt struck her.

She suffered a cardiac arrest, but was revived and is now in hospital.

Inspector Nathan Sheration from New South Wales Ambulance said the mission to retrieve the woman was "quite difficult".

"They had a smouldering tree on one side, and obviously it was still raining and [there were] also lightning strikes, so it was quite difficult circumstances," he told 7 News.

The second incident happened 10 minutes later at Dee Why Beach in northern Sydney as a 29-year-old man was finishing his swim and exiting the water.

Witnesses said the lightning bolt struck near the man, and he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest.

He was revived by his friends and paramedics who gave him CPR. He was then taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.

Both victims are still reported to be in a critical condition in hospital.
