A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck 139 kilometres off the northwestern coast of Jamaica near the Cayman Islands

It had a depth of 10km and struck at 2:10pm (local time). It is being classed as a "major" earthquake.

A tsunami warning was issued shortly after the earthquake, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center now says that threat has "largely passed".

According to the US Geological Survey, reports from people who say they felt the earthquake indicate that the shaking near Montego Bay on Jamaica's northwest coast was moderate to strong, but damage was very light.

In George Town in the Cayman Islands, felt reports also show the shaking was moderate to strong.

The earthquake was also reportedly felt on Cuba's southern coast near Santiago de Cuba, where it was described as light.

People in the Caribbean have taken to social media to share their experience of the quake.
