Members of US neo-Nazi group arrested over plans to derail trains, start 'race war'

Six members of a US neo-Nazi terrorist cell have been arrested after the FBI bugged an apartment they were holding meetings in.

The men, members of white supremacist group The Base, were allegedly caught making plans to start a "race war".

Luke Lane, 21, Michael Helterbrand, 25, and Jacob Kaderli, 19, face charges of conspiracy to commit murder and participation in a criminal gang.

The trio was arrested in Georgia on January 17.

The next day, Brian Lemely Jr, 33, William Garfield Bilbrough, 19, and Patrik Jordan Mathews, 27, were taken into custody in Maryland.

"Derail some trains, kill some people and poison some water supplies," one was heard saying in the bugged apartment.

Before their arrest Lemley, Bilbrough and Mathews were allegedly planning an attack at a pro-gun rally in Virginia, reports the New York Times.

"We can't let Virginia go to waste, we just can't," Mathews is believed to have said on tape.

Some of the men arrested have had previous military training in the US and Canada.

The Base is described as an "expanding threat" by extremism experts. Formed in late 2018, it follows Al-Qaeda's model of radicalising people and inspiring them to plot their own attacks.

'Al-Qaeda' in Arabic means "the base" or "the foundation".

It's estimated there are dozens of dedicated members and the group is said to be constantly trying to recruit people online.

Members of The Base have discussed creating a white ethno-state, attacking minorities and building bombs, reports CNN.

They have also discussed killing police officers and stealing their weapons, and expressed admiration for mass shootings that have been carried out on minority groups.
