A married Australian couple was gunned down on their front porch in the Melbourne suburb of Yarraville overnight.

Lindita and Veton Musai, married in January 2019,  were enjoying each other's company at their home on New Year's Eve when the shooting took place.

Seven News reports a 55-year-old man who was known to the victims, shot 25-year-old Lindita dead, before firing at her husband.

Witnesses describe hearing a large bang and screaming before seeing a man fleeing into a nearby bush, where he shot himself.

Lewis Thorne, a neighbour, was walking to work when he witnessed the alleged gunman shooting himself.

"(He was) shaking, very white in the face, popped out of the bush... about a metre away from me, drew the gun to his head and pulled the trigger," Thorne told Seven.

"He fell onto the ground and then somehow, two or three minutes later, he was still alive and got back up and did the exact same thing to himself."

Police swarmed the scene within minutes as distressed family members started to arrive to the horrible news.

Veton, 29, was taken to the Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The alleged shooter was also taken to hospital and is fighting for his life, under a heavy police guard.

Seven News reports the shooting was carried out after a dispute between the couple and an estranged family member.
