Photos show desperate bid to save burned animals on Kangaroo Island

Dozens of animals have been rescued from a deadly blaze on South Australia's Kangaroo Island.

The fire began in December but worsened on Friday, quickly spreading.

Locals and firefighters rescued some wildlife at the weekend, taking them to Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park.

Heartbreaking pictures show people carrying kangaroos and koalas in their arms. Some were too burnt to be saved and were euthanised at the part, reported 7 News.

It's believed the fire has wiped out half of the island's koala population.

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park has started crowdfunding to cover the costs of caring for so many injured and displaced animals. The GoFundMe page has raised more than $300,000 in just 24 hours.

Two people have died in the Kangaroo Island fire. Pilot Dick Lang, 78, and his son 43-year-old Clayton were killed on Friday when their car was trapped by flames.

More than a third of the 160km-long island has burnt, reports The Guardian.

A $1 million luxury lodge was also destroyed in the blaze. Southern Ocean Lodge owners James and Hayley Baillie said they sheltered in a specially built bunker as the fire raged around them.

"We're absolutely shocked and saddened," they told 7 News.
