The sails of the Australian Sydney Opera house lit up with the heroic images of firefighters on Saturday.

Organisers said on the landmark's Instagram page they wanted to show their support for everyone affected by the Australian bushfires.

"We want to send a message of hope and strength, and importantly to thank the emergency services and volunteers for their incredible efforts and courage."

On the far left, three firefighters stand smiling, while on the second left a woman hugs a firefighter.

The biggest sail shows two firefighters, slightly dishevelled, standing together, while the image on the far right displays the message "thank you firies".

According to 9 News, other images projected on the sails showed Australian wildlife desperately escaping the bushfires.

Thousands of people have been left displaced by the bushfires, many have lost their lives and millions of animals have died.
