Baboon breakout: 'Psychotic' primates escape 'medical research facility' in Sydney

A baboon breakout in Sydney on Tuesday has caused an emergency services call-out.

Three "psychotic" primates managed to escape from what's reported to be a "medical research facility" at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

According to 7 News, the primates were being used for medical research at the hospital.

Video shot by the public shows the baboons on the loose.

"They even had shiny red bottoms," one caller told radio station 2GB

"I had a coffee about an hour ago, and I thought, what have I put in this coffee?"

Another woman told the station her daughter had spotted the animals.

"She texted me, 'Mum, they were psychotic'," she said.

A police spokesperson confirmed to media the baboons had been successfully contained shortly afterwards.

"Just after 5:30pm officers from Inner West Police Area Command were called to a car park on Missiden Road and Lucas St Camperdown, after reports three baboons escaped while being transported," a NSW police spokesperson told The Guardian.

"They are currently contained and police are working with experts to safely return them to their facility.

"There is no immediate danger to the public but people are advised to avoid the area."
