The world's tallest building was lit up with the New Zealand flag last night to celebrate Waitangi Day.

The flag was showcased on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai which stands 829.8 metres high.

New Zealand Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Matthew Hawkins tweeted a picture thanking the UAE for the gesture.

"Thank you! Shukran! To our friends in the UAE who have celebrated #WaitangiDay by lighting up the @BurjKhalifa," he captioned the Tweet.

This isn't the first time the Burj Khalifa has paid tribute to New Zealand. Following the Christchurch terror attacks, an iconic image of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was projected on the building.

It was also recently lit up with a tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant who was killed in a helicopter crash in January.

This week, the Burj Khalifa put on a light show in solidarity with China over the coronavirus outbreak, which has killed 565 people and infected 28,275 globally.
