Australia's capital may not be its most glamorous city, but as from Friday cannabis is legal in Canberra for personal consumption.

The legislation was passed in September by ACT's government, and came into force on Friday, the first state in Australia to legalise weed.

People over the age of 18 are allowed to possess up to 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants.

A maximum of four plants can be grown per household, however hydroponic setups are illegal.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters on Friday he would not be taking advantage of the new laws.

Possessing cannabis is still illegal under federal law, but Morrison said that law wouldn't be enforced in Canberra.

Under the new laws Canberrans won't be prosecuted under state law for growing two plants at home, or for smoking cannabis in their home.

It still can't be smoked in public. It is still illegal to sell or share your produce or expose it to children.
