The suspect was shot dead on Sunday afternoon (local time) after he started stabbing people at random in the suburb of Streatham.

The man was wielding a machete and wearing a fake explosive device on his chest, according to Metropolitan Police.

Footage shared to Twitter shows armed police moments after the man was shot dead.

In the video, dozens of officers can be seen wielding guns and converging on the man's body before reaching down and checking whether he is alive. Several police cars are seen in the middle of the street with their sirens blaring.

In the video, an officer is seen explaining that there has been a terrorist incident and people need to leave.

Diners in the footage are heard gasping in shock and one woman, believed to be a cafe worker, asks whether people can have half an hour to finish eating.

The officer replies by saying, "A terrorist has been shot just down there, they have got a possible IED (improvised explosive device) vest on, if you insist on staying half an hour and putting everyone's life in danger then be my guest".

The woman reluctantly agrees to leave, and diners begin to evacuate the restaurant.

Another video posted on Twitter shows people taking cover in a shop after the suspect was shot.
