A 28-year-old Chinese medic who worked for 10 days straight to help fight coronavirus has died from a cardiac arrest, reportedly onset by exhaustion.

Song Yingjie worked in Hunan, China, at highway toll booths conducting temperature checks for coronavirus and issuing medical supplies.

The pharmacist was asked to work every day from 4pm to 12am since January 25, according to Zhao Xiaonian, the deputy director of the medical centre Song worked at.

It is understood Song likely worked overtime during this period.

Song dropped colleagues home after finishing work on Monday before returning to his dormitory where roommates later found his body.

It is believed exhaustion brought on his cardiac arrest.

The man's father, Song Guanghui, told local news outlet The Paper he was "heartbroken" about his son's death.

"I also have a daughter in Wuhan who can't come back...You asked me if I am worried? Of course I am."

Social media users have hailed the medic a "hero".

The news comes as the coronavirus death toll sits at 565 deaths with more than 28,000 cases reported worldwide.
