A Harvey Norman store in Australia has been slammed for a "racist" sign about coronavirus placed in front of one of its shops.

"No Coronavirus in our mattresses as ours are Australian made!" the sign erected in front of its Albury store on Saturday says.

Harvey Norman said in a statement the Albury franchise had acted out of its own accord.

"Albury franchisee acted in isolation without any consultation or communication beyond their store. As soon as the company was made aware, the sign was immediately removed and the franchisee told this was unacceptable. Our apologies," said Harvey Norman in a statement.

Despite its apology, the photo quickly gained backlash on social media.

"Not helping @HarveyNormanAU," posted one person.

Another said, "I'd rather buy a Chinese mattress than a racist one".

Other people have used the sign as another reason not to shop at Harvey Norman.

"This is disgusting! Would definitely NOT buy from any store advertising this way," said one Twitter user.
